After watching the video about “honor killings” in my women culture and society class, I realize how bratty and over-privelaged I have been my whole damn life. Women in Pakistan are being murdered by their own families because they run away from their 50-year old creepy husbands. Do their families honestly expect them to quietly oblige as they are sold to strange men who are almost 20-30 years older? And then when they take control of their life and leave their husband’s home, they are killed by the men of their family in the name of honor. They are accused of horrible things like adultery, when their only “sin” was wanting a better life for themselves. And of course, this is happening in this day and age, with hundreds of thousands of women in Pakistan. NOBODY cares because of course, these women are in the lower-middle class; they have no money, no rights, and no voice. They just have to pray that their own brother, father, or husband will not shoot them in their sleep. A lot of the lectures that my prof gives in that class really puts shit into perspective for me. I feel so indebted to my parents and to my God for giving me such a blessed life. Even when I complain about the most insignificant thing, I realize now that I have been so lucky. And what have I done with it so far? Close to nothing. My mom came to America with almost no money, but somehow got an education and managed to work our family’s convenience store at the same time. She worked night shifts until 6/7 in the morning, then took off to school like it was no big thing. She had no extra money to buy nice things for herself like I do today. On top of that, she could barely speak English, and she STILL managed to get a solid gpa (maybe even better than me….awkward). And this is not only my story, it is the story of many 1st generation kids in America. She does all these nice things for me because she wants me to have everything that she couldn’t have for herself, but do I even deserve it? I honestly don’t, but I still complain to her when I don’t have a pair of Sperrys or the Kindle that I so DESPERATELY need -_- I’m messed up
